Andy Warhol

Andrew Warhola (1928-1987), better known as Andy Warhol, was born in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania in 1928. After
studying pictorial design at the Carnegie Institute of Technology, he moved to New York in1949 to work as a commercial artist. By the early 1950s, he was given solo shows in art galleries dedicated to his drawings. He demonstrated an interest in the subject of American popular culture as well as reproductive artistic processes such as silkscreen. Both of these elements would later become hallmarks of his style, which is equally marked by an objective tone and eye-catching colour palette borrowed from the world of advertising. In the 1960s and with the aid of assistants, Warhol made acrylic paintings and prints of mass-produced images, such the iconic Campbell’s soup cans and images of celebrities. In 1963 he began to work in the medium of film.
