Anish Kapoor is one of the most influential sculptors of his generation. Born in Bombay, India in 1954, he has lived and worked in London since the early 1970’s. Kapoor’s work reflects upon metaphysical polarities including presence and absence, being and non-being, place and non-place and the solid and the intangible. The deep influence of Western and Eastern cultures resonate in his sculptures. Kapoor received international acclaim for his novel use of a wide range of materials. His sculptures address the artist’s fascination with darkness and light in the translucent quality of the resin pieces, the opacity the pigments, the luminosity of alabaster and the elegant reflections of stainless steel and water. By blending disparate materials, Kapoor’s meditative sculptures appear weightless, yet imposing.
