Franz West

Franz West’s earliest works were collages and small sculptures made from papier-mâché. In the early 1970s, inspired by Viennese Actionism and especially the body and material actions, West moved beyond making collage to sculpture. He made a series of small portable sculptures entitled Adaptives. These awkward-looking, amorphous plaster objects incorporated elements from performance art along with traditional sculptural techniques. By the late 1980s, West developed and intensified his spatial references in installations of seating and loungers. These large-scale, polyester and aluminium works questioned the relationship between art and utility objects and invited the audience to a sensory understanding of his art. In September 2010, Room in Rome, an installation of outdoor sculpture opened at Piazza di Pietra, Rome.
